The CrossFit Games® 2015 took a turn to the tactical side when the individual competitors did the “Murph” workout on Friday, July 24. Each competitor, 40 men and 40 women, wore a 5.11 Tactical® TacTecTM Plate Carrier during the competition. The women’s vests held 14 pounds of weight, and the men’s vests carried 20 pounds.

The “Murph” workout consists of a 1-mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 squats, and another 1-mile run to cap it off. This is all done wearing the weight vest. And on competition day, the weather added another element of challenge. The heat and unusually high humidity for southern California put an additional tax on the athletes. During the grueling hero workout, the athletes and spectators were humbly reminded of US Navy S.E.A.L. Michael “Murph” Murphy, the inspiration for this hero workout, and  the sacrifice he made for his country and the men in his unit.

TacTec Plate Carriers for days! Each competitor received a vest with a customized name strip, number, and CrossFit Games patches. The vests were theirs to keep after the Games.

Adjusting the fit of the vest was key for the athletes’ best performance. An imperfect fit would not only make the vest uncomfortable, but it could interfere with the workout. 5.11 team members were on hand Thursday and Friday to help athletes adjust straps and yoke harnesses to achieve the most ideal fit. It was all hands on deck to make sure competitors had the help they needed to get all the adjustments right. Even CEO Tom Davin and President Francisco Morales were helping out.

Competitors tried on the vests and worked on getting the right fit after receiving them. Many of the athletes did pushups, pull ups, ran, and more to make sure the vest was set up the way they wanted it to fit.

After the women’s “Murph” competition, our tent in the vendor village was quite literally swarmed with fans and athletes who saw the TacTec Plate Carriers in action and wanted one for their own training. We were flattered and humbled to have such an overwhelmingly positive and curious reaction from the crowds.

Tom Davin and Dave Castro, the creator of CrossFit Games, worked together to bring “Murph” into the competition. CrossFit Games has never included a hero workout in competition until now. We were proud to be part of this historic event.

5.11 Tactical has been involved with the CrossFit Games for a few years now, and each time we return, we meet new athletes who have inspiring stories. It’s exciting to come back and see the people we’ve met along the way. It is an incredibly tight-knit community and CrossFit athletes are some of the most welcoming and enthusiastic people you’ll ever meet.
